Medium Size Business Network

The most common reason to set up a medium size business network (LAN) in a business or home office is the need to share applications, files or information among multiple users within the organization.

A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network of interconnected workstations sharing the resources of one or more servers within a relatively small geographic area. Typically, this will be within the area of a small office building. However, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) can extend a local area network over a much wider area.

Typically, the server or servers have a suite of application programs and data storage capabilities that are shared by multiple workstation users. Users who require an application frequently can usually download it from the server and then run it from their local hard disk. Users can order printing and other services as needed through applications that run on the LAN server. Users can also share files with others on the network with read and write access privileges maintained by a LAN administrator. A medium business network may serve as few as two users or, in the case of FDDI installations, may serve several thousand workstations.
